Martha, Martha, Martha

Do you remember the Brady Bunch episode where Jan complains, “All I hear around here is Marcia, Marcia, Marcia!” She can’t stand that her perfect older sister gets all the attention.

Martha, a close friend of Jesus, is a bit like Jan Brady. She is slaving away in the kitchen, preparing a meal for Jesus and his disciples, while her sister, Mary, sits at Jesus’s feet, listening to his teaching, offering no help. Martha can stand it no longer. In essence, she blurts, “Tell my sister to get off her butt and lend a hand! I am doing EVERYthing!” Jesus seems slightly amused, “Martha, Martha,” he says. “Mary has chosen what is best and it will not be taken from her.”

Perhaps Jesus views our busy, task-oriented lives with similar bemusement. “Come to me all who are weary and heavy laden and I will give you rest,” he says in Matthew 11:28.

In these first days of the new year, most of us are heavy laden. Let’s pause and hear the voice of God Himself, “______, _______, sit at my feet. Choose what is best.”

Let 2022 be the year, we bid farewell to the Jan Brady within us (though you have to admire her honesty and her beachy waves, which were clearly ahead of her time!)
